TRASH TALK!

What a fantastic time we had on Tuesday, 2 August at Status Chopperia and Grille in Savassi for Patrick McAnaney’s Trash Talk presentation.  Over 50 people from 11 countries joined us for an evening of education, networking and plain ole fun.  It was an event truly representing the spirit of Minas International’s mission of Globalizing Locally.

The Wrap-Up

Patrick McAnaney, a Fulbright scholar in Brazil, talked about the role of organizations of pickers in solid waste management. He began with an overview of the current

environmental and social situation in Brazil and went on to talk about the history of picker associations and cooperatives.  Patrick explained the organizational model of these groups and gave a visual tour of a sorting warehouse run by a picker cooperative. In closing he provided analysis of the challenges and opportunities facing this movement, focusing on political, economic and managerial issues.

TRASH TALK!

Tuesday, 2 August – 18:30

At STATUS Chopperia & Grill in the heart of Savassi

We’ve all seen them… the guys who pull those monsterously full carts of trash up and down the steep hills and through traffic at all hours.  Did you ever wonder…

  • Where does the trash go?
  • Do these folks make a living at this?
  • Are they organized or is everyone out for themselves?
  • Does the government sanction (or depend?) on these “trash pickers”?

Wonder no more!

Patrick McAnaney will help us sort it all out!

Patrick has been living in Minas Gerais and working with UFMG to research this phenomena of trash collecting.  You may be surprised to learn it is a bigger business than you’ve ever imagined!

  • When: Tuesday, 2 August, 18:30-20:30
  • Where: Status Chopperia & Grill – Av. Getulio Vargas, 1238 Savassi
  • Cost:  FREE with PRE-registration or R$ 5.00 at the door.

Coffee Chat PICS

Click Here to see all the PICS!

We had a great time at the Coffee Chat!  A terrific group of folks joined as Minas International community member Judy Robbe graciously opened her home to us.   The conversations were as diverse as the countries represented … England, Phillipines, Brazil, USA, Russia, Canada.   It was a great opportunity to network both personally and professionally.

Stay tuned as we’ll be offering another informal get together in a few weeks…
